What to plant in zone 5 during fall?

Can I still put my potted roses in the ground?

What about my peonies and tulip bulbs?

What to plant in zone 5 during fall?
Yes to all of them. Any perennail is OK to plant in the fall in zone 5 but you better get on it. Any of the spring blooming bulbs (tulips, crocus, etc) can be planted as long as the ground isn't frozen.

One thing I would suggest about the potted rose: Make sure there are drainage holes and plant the whole pot for the winter. In March you can pull it out and plant it into the ground. You will stress the roots less this way.
Reply:with potted roses you might be taking a chance unless you have a well protected area and still there is no guarantee. peonies can be done now as well as tulips. however, if you transplant your peonies you won't get flowers next spring it usually takes a couple of years to reestablish themselves.other ideas might be hardy mums they are beautiful in the fall and will come back next year.
Reply:In general fall is the best time of the year to plant. You have a cool moist season, followed by a dormant season, followed by another cool moist season. Sort of optimal for root growth. In addition there is more time before the plant can be stressed by the hot dry summer.

I too live in USDA hardiness zone 5. I'd recommend a 2" layer of mulch to protect the rose and peony. But go ahead and plant. Oh... and probably a rose cone over the rose. Cut the top off of your styrofoam rose cone, and let branches stick out of the top if it is that big.

Fertilize in the spring! Not this fall.

Good luck-
