Has any gardener in ZONE 5 ever dug up and moved plants during the WINTER?

My city has no snow at present, and i was thinking of digging up and moving two peony plants this February before my spring plants start coming up and crowding them again. Would this kill the peonies? The ground is not unbearabley hard to dig in, by the way..

you could kill the plants-all you need is a hard freeze-especially that there isn't any snow to insulate. it's at it's most vulnerable in winter so it's better to wait till spring.
Reply:I live in Zone 5. If ground is workable, you could, but I'd be sure to repack carefully and mulch heavily in case another freeze comes along. Why do you want to move them now? Spring fever? Could also cover with cones to protect them.
